(Safety) Orange Tide

November 9, 2011

(Safety) Orange Tide is made of waste plastic sheeting from a local manufacturer. The project is a play of pattern and space, forcing viewers to navigate a specific path. The pattern is based upon the eddies created as water from a river empties into a larger body of water, where the two currents collide and mesh.

Free Radical 2011

October 13, 2011

Way before ArtPrize decided to “re-boot” the conversation, a bunch of local artists decided to start a conversation about Art in Grand Rapids. Now in its ninth year the Free Radical is still focused on grassroots organizing, local art, and engaging the broader community. Free Radical 2011 is on Sat, Oct 29th on Division between Fulton and Wealthy.

Of course, since the Free Radical is my all time favorite local art event, and Site:Lab has an awesome location to play with, it looks like I will be making a new installation for the show. I am not going to post images until after the event but I will promise you something new and different.

Happy Hour Under the Cloud

September 5, 2011

This year during ArtPrize I will be hosting a Happy Hour concert series featuring some great local music. It has turned out to be a great selection of music – from old time gospel to hipster shoe-gazer music. Here is the schedule:

Happy Hour Under the Cloud FInale: Saturday, Oct 1 (6PM)

The Icicles with special guests Radiator Hospital and The Campanellis

I am happy to announce Bear Manor Properties as my first sponsor for ArtPrize 2011. Bear Manor has made substantial investments in Wealthy Street in both the commercial and residential property sectors. Over the next few months they are allowing me the use of production space at 1019 Wealthy Street SE. They are also currently involved in building a new brewery in Eastown – Harmony Brewing Company.

This just in…

June 22, 2011

After long and tedious meetings. e-mails, and negotiations with a dozen different ArtPrize venues I am happy to announce that I will be creating a site-specific piece for the Women’s City Club ArtPrize Exhibition Center for ArtPrize 2011. I am excited about the space, the ornate historic interior will be a nice visual foil for my work. The piece I will be making is called “The Sky is Not Falling,” and will be composed of thousands of pieces of plain office paper. The idea of transformation is central to the work – transforming common paper into something less than common, transforming the space, transforming how we look at things.

I am also excited to be working with Michele Bosak and the WCC crew. I enjoy Michele’s curatorial vision and was happy to see it play out during last year’s ArtPrize. It is, I imagine, a difficult process to filter through all of the work to build a cohesive show.

I snagged this spring time photo of the WCC from Steven DePolo’s Flickr site.
